A Derry-Londonderry mother has spoken of her horror after she was told the body of her beloved family cat was ‘turned into biofuel’ after being knocked down and killed on the road near her home.

Veronica McMonagle says she was left ‘with nightmares’ after her cat Gemini was ‘rendered’ - a process that converts waste animal tissue into usable materials - after being killed on the road near her Shantallow home.

She says her cat was micro-chipped and she wants the city’s council to ensure cat remains are routinely scanned to track down and inform their owners:
