The PSNI has confirmed a viable pipe bomb type device was found outside a property in North Belfast.

It led to a security alert and the bomb squad was called to the Stanhope Street area just before 1pm this afternoon.

The device has now been taken away for further forensic examination.

People are being allowed to return to their homes and roads have re-opened.

PSNI Detective Sergeant McPhillips said: "Police would like to thank the local community for their patience while we worked to keep them safe."

Adding that, "I would appeal to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area or anyone with any information that could help our investigation to contact detectives at Musgrave on 101, quoting reference number 619 of 6/10/18."
