Two week old baby hospitalized after alleged rape

A two-week old baby is in hospital with serious injuries after an alleged rape.

It's believed the infant's in intensive care at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

A man's appeared at Armagh Magistrates' Court charged with rape and causing grievous bodily harm to a child. 

Police say detectives from the PSNI Serious Crime Branch are investigating an incident in which an infant sustained a number of serious injuries after an incident on Saturday, September 29.

A 25-year-old man was charged with rape and grievous bodily harm with intent.

The defendant made a brief appearance at Armagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday in order to hear the charges read out to him following the alleged incident on Saturday, September 29.

A detective sergeant, also present in court, said he believed he could connect the 25-year-old with the charges.

No bail application was made by the defendant’s counsel.

He was remanded into custody at Maghaberry prison and is due to appear before Newry Magistrates’ Court next Wednesday morning via videolink.
