A police officer has been dragged along the road by a moving car in Newtownstewart.

He received cuts and bruises to the head and body during the incident at around 11pm last night.

The vehicle was stopped near Mourne Park, but the driver made off while officers were speaking to him.

It's understood the injured officer was dragged some distance before being thrown off.

The car was forced to stop in Old Castle Road a short time later after being spotted by another PSNI patrol.

A 17 year old suspect was arrested and remains in police custody.
