Polling is underway in a local council by election in Mid and East Antrim.

The by-election was called after the death of independent councilor and five times former Mayor of Carrickfergus, Jim Brown.

68-year-old Mr. Brown served the Carrick Castle ward and died in August.

He'd been an elected representative in the town for almost four decades and was awarded an MBE in 2014 for his services to local government.

Mr.Brown previously served as a member of the UUP as a Carrickfergus Borough Councillor before leaving the party in the mid 1990's.

Five candidates are seeking election today and polling booths will close at 10 o'clock tonight.

Counting will begin tomorrow with a result expected around mid-morning.

Candidates standing are: Lauren Gray from the Alliance Party; Si Harvey from the Democrats and Veterans Party; Peter Johnston from the DUP; John McDermott of the UUP and Independent candidate Will Sibley.
