A man has been arrested following a sudden death in a residential area on the outskirts of east Belfast.

Detectives from the PSNI's Major Investigation Team are examining the circumstances on Thursday night following the death of a 49-year-old man.

The incident happened in the Kings Road area of Tullycarnet.

A 26-year-old man has been arrested in the Belfast area and is being questioned by detectives.

The scene remained taped off on Friday morning, including a section of covered walkway between two blocks of flats.

A PSNI spokesman said a post-mortem is due to take place to determine the cause of death, adding "there are no further details at this time".

Detective Chief Inspector Darren McCartney has issued an appeal for information.

"I would appeal to anyone who was in the Kings Road area last night between 6pm and 8pm and saw anything that may be of assistance to our investigation, please call 101 and ask to speak to detectives in Ladas Drive," he said.

East Belfast MP Gavin Robinson described the news as "disturbing" in a post on Twitter.

The DUP MP echoed the call by police for anyone with information to contact the PSNI.
