Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has launched a new 'Food Smart' campaign to encourage people to think, shop and eat smarter.

Food Smart, a partnership project with Love Food Hate Waste, aims to help people save money whilst benefiting the environment too.

Families in Northern Ireland spend on average £64 every week on food – the highest spend of any region in the UK, making it an expensive part of the weekly budget.

Compounding the problem, the average family throws out up to £60 of perfectly good food every month, so it makes sense for everyone to make the most of the food we buy.

The Food Smart campaign is full of tips to help people re-connect and value their food.

So with this in mind, the Council suggest  'using our loaf,' as more than 24 million slices of bread are thrown away every day in the UK.

To help address the problem, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Food Smart campaign is coming to Ballycastle next Friday (October 28th). From 10.30am until 2.30pm, Council staff will visit Donnelly’s Bakery on Ann Street and Ursa Minor, on Castle Street. They will hand out free bread bag clips with every loaf purchased and provide tips on how to keep your bread fresher for longer to prevent waste.

For further inspiration and ideas on how to make the most of their food and leftovers people can go to www.lovefoodhatewaste.com.  The website is full of information which will help us all to appreciate the true value and cost of our food, not just the amount we pay at the till.

By becoming involved, we can all get in the habit of planning our meals, shopping smarter, controlling our portions and wasting less food and money!

There is more information on the Food Smart campaign, on the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council website www.causewaycoastandglens.gov.uk
