A man has been killed and a police officer injured in a crash in Ireland.

The incident happened in Castleblaney, Co Monaghan, at 11.30pm on Tuesday after the officer attempted to stop a car close to the town's Garda station.

The silver Audi A6 drove off and dragged the Garda officer 500m along the road.

The car then crashed into a Skoda Octavia in the town's Main Street.

The driver of the Skoda, in his 40s, was killed in the collision.

The member of the Garda, in his late 20s, suffered head, facial and leg injuries. He was being treated at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

The driver of the Audi was arrested at the scene and taken to Carrickmacross Garda station for questioning.

Main Street was closed on Wednesday morning to facilitate an investigation of the area by forensic officers and crime scene examiners.
