A man charged with possessing the gun police believe was used in the shooting of journalist Lyra McKee has failed in a bid to get his bail varied.

The 29 year old was shot dead during rioting in the Creggan area of Derry/Londonderry on the 18th of April 2019.

28 year old Niall Sheerin of Tyrconnell Street in the city is charged with possessing a 22 pistol with intent to endanger life and in suspicious circumstances - on dates between September 2018 and June 2020.

Today, his solicitor, Paddy MacDermott, applied to vary Sheerin's bail - meaning he would not have to sign with police 7 times a week.

However, Deputy District Judge Liam McStay said he would not override the conditions which were imposed by the High Court.

He added: "It is not within my purview to change that" and refused the bail variation application.

The case was adjourned until March 4th.
