Man arrested following attempted hijacking in north Belfast

A 35 year-old  man has been arrested following an attempted hijacking in north Belfast.

A report was made to police shortly before 2.10am that a male approached a silver Toyota Yaris vehicle, which was sitting at traffic lights at the top of Donegall Street.

The suspect had a verbal exchange with the driver before getting into the back seat of the car.

He then got out of the car and reached for the driver’s door.

Thankfully, the driver was able to drive away from the suspect.

A 35-year-old man was later arrested in the area on suspicion of attempted hijacking and interference with vehicles and he remains in custody, assisting with enquiries.

Detective Sergeant Wilson said: "This was a distressing incident for the driver, and I would appeal for anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything, or who may have dash cam footage to contact us on 101 quoting reference 115 of 23/04/21."
