Man arrested after sudden death of baby in Lurgan

A man has been arrested following the sudden death of a baby in Co Armagh.

The 23-year-old was detained in Lurgan on suspicion of child cruelty and possession of class A and B drugs but was later released on police bail.

PSNI Detective Inspector Dave Hodge said: "Police inquiries are ongoing at this stage."

He added: "A post-mortem examination will take place in due course and there are no further details at this time."

SDLP Upper Bann Assembly member Dolores Kelly said local people were shocked.

She said: "This is a terrible tragedy. It's the worst thing that any parent could imagine.

"People in Lurgan are just shocked and deeply saddened at the news.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the baby girl's mother and family at this incredibly difficult time."

Sinn Fein Assembly member John O'Dowd voiced similar concerns.
