Macosquin Primary school compete for National Choir title

Macosquin Primary are the only school from Northern Ireland to be represented

The National Choir of the Year competition pits the UK's finest singing groups against each other.  And Macosquin Primary School is the only primary school from Northern Ireland to be represented at the category finals on Sunday.

After hearing about the competition in February, choir conductor Cathy Reid entered the children into the competition, and auditioned for their place in April.  "We were whittled down from 44 choirs to 12" said Cathy  "we're now in the final four of the Children's category"

35 pupils will fly out tomorrow to Birmingham to perform in the Symphony Hall on Sunday. They booked their place ahead of 160 others who competed in the audition stage of the competition.

The Macosquin choir will battle it out to become one of just six groups to progress to the Grand Final in Wales.  The Millennium Centre in Cardiff will play host to the final on the 3rd December.

Macosquin have also received help from the local community in funding their venture.  "its been very costly" said Cathy "but we've been lucky to have some many businesses and so many people in the community to sponsor us"

The experience seems to be very much worth it, with the children benefiting from such an experience.  "It's fantastic for the kids" said Cathy "to be involved in something as big in this, to have that knowledge of what a competition is"
