There are concerns that gangs of up to 30 young people are becoming more violent in north Belfast.

It comes after a bus shelter was destroyed on Ligoniel Road by a group of youths at around 6.30 last night.

A short time later two cars were damaged by a young person armed with a golf club.

Councillor Dale Pankhurst says more needs to be done to combat the problem.

The DUP representative says he was shocked by what he witnessed.

PSNI Inspector Graham said “Just after 6:40pm on Monday 30th December, police received a report that a bus shelter had been damaged in the Ligoniel Road area by a group of youths.

“Later in the evening, there were reports of two vehicles damaged in the Ligoniel Road area, by a youth armed with a golf club.

“Enquiries are continuing and anyone with any information regarding these incidents should contact police on 101, quoting reference number 1755 30/12/19

“Young people who choose to engage in anti-social behaviour must understand the impact it can have on the community, that it is unacceptable and it must stop.

“I also repeat our appeal to parents and guardians to help prevent young people from becoming involved or caught up in these activities. Know where your children and young people are, who they are with, what they are doing and what they are arranging on their social media accounts.

“Anyone with any information of anti-social behaviour are asked to contact police on 101, or alternatively information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”
