A new ampitheatre is to be created at a World War one memorial at Brackfield Wood between Derry/Londonderry and Claudy.

The development will become the centrepiece of the current commemorative site based at Brackfield Wood.

The Woodland Trust, which owns the land, has submitted a planning application for the project to the local council.

Currently, 40,000 native trees are being planted in memory of the 40,000 Irish soldiers killed in the first world war.

East Londonderry MP, Gregory Campbell has welcomed plans to construct the ampitheatre.

He said, “I am delighted that the Director of The Woodland Trust has indicated a planning application project has been submitted to develop an amphitheatre as the centrepiece for the First World War Centenary Wood at Brackfield between Londonderry and Claudy.

"The proposed project will also provide opportunities for people to visit and enjoy native woodland in a beautiful and historic setting.

"Currently 40,000 native trees are being planted in memory of the 40,000 Irish soldiers killed in the Great War.

"Several years ago, I was delighted to welcome HRH Princess Anne to the site and helped to plant 100 saplings marking 100 years since the Great War.

"A recently installed poetry trail was also unveiled at the woods and I was delighted to welcome Her Royal Highness back once more.

"It features eight stone sculptures, each carved with lines of poetry, and strategically placed to lead visitors into and through the woodland.

"The new woodland together with this proposed centrepiece in the setting of the Faughan Valley will serve as a lasting tribute to those from what is now both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland who gave their lives during World War One and ensures their sacrifice will not be forgotten.

"The development of Brackfield Wood, which is the only one of it's type anywhere in N.I. should encourage local people and tourists to visit this commemorative site set in idyllic woodland.”
