NMDD council slammed after Louth cllr raises cash for Newry group

A voluntary group's hit out after a councillor south of the border raised cash when the local council here said it had none to give.

€2,500 was given to Newry Maritime Association towards today's tribute launch event for the crew of Rescue 116.

It will take place at Haubowline Lighthouse in Cranfield.

But the cash didn't come from Newry, Mourne and Down district council.

Louth County councillor Brendan McSherry made an application for a cross-border grant on behalf of the Association, as James McAreavey told Q Radio:

Today's event at Hauwbowline Lighthouse is expected to be attended by many local rescue groups including RNLI, the Coastguard and Mourne Mountain Rescue.

The lighthouse tribute will begin on the 11th of August until September.

Meanwhile at Carlingford Lough in Warrenpoint, more than a hundred boats and yachts will take part in a tribute flotilla for the Rescue 116 crew.

A red or white rose will be laid in the waters by each partaker as a rescue helicopter flies past.

It will take place this Sunday.
