Police have come under attack from stone-throwing children while responding to a serious incident near Newry Train Station.
Tactical support officers as well as crews from Newtownhamilton, Kilkeel, Warrenpoint and Armagh were called to a 'concern for safety' yesterday afternoon.
During the operation that forced closure of part of the A1, they say children as young as 12 from the Park Head Estate pelted them with rocks and masonry.
They have appealed to parents to speak to children about the dangers of such actions, writing in a social media post, "This is totally unacceptable, dangerous and completely pointless. Thank you to all those parents who had control of their children and knew of their whereabouts. To the parents of the children involved in today’s antics we would appreciate if you were able to educate your little darlings on the rights and wrongs of society as well as the dangers it posses to passing motorists."
They continued, "In respect of the original incident we were able to bring this to a successful conclusion. A further thank you to all additional resources from outside the district who assisted in this."
