Burns and scalds campaign launched in Newry, Mourne and Down district

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is launching a preventative campaign to highlight the dangers of hot drinks and food to babies and young children.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairman, Councillor Mark Murnin said, “The risks associated with handling hot drinks around babies and young children is very high, especially in busy coffee shops and restaurants.

“A child’s skin is 15 times thinner than an adult’s and will burn or scald much more easily. Even after 15 minutes of a hot drink being made it can still cause scalding to skin which can result in a year’s graft treatment. Not only should parents be vigilant when out, they should also remember the helpful tips at home.

“I would like to thank all of those local businesses taking part in this campaign. By helping to reduce preventable injuries we can reduce potentially life changing scarring in children and young people.”

Dr Ruth Spedding, Consultant in Emergency Medicine for the Southern Health and Social Care Trust said, “Hot appliances, liquids and bath water are responsible for more than half of all burns and scalds, with young children being particularly vulnerable to accidents. Burns and scalds can happen so easily and quickly but by being more alert to the hazards we can all help to reduce the risks.”

The Council will be distributing specially designed posters and information cards to food establishments within the district, highlighting tips to prevent scalds, such as keeping all hot items out of reach of children.

The Council hopes that all food outlets will display the information prominently to encourage the public to follow the tips and prevent a scald from occurring.
