New Ulster signing, South African prop Schalk van der Merwe, is to undergo shoulder surgery after an injury he picked up in action for his Super Rugby side Southern Kings.
The 26 year-old is, however, expected to be fit for the start of the Pro12 season, according to Ulster Rugby.
Ulster signed him for 2 years, earlier this year.
In addition, South African flanker Arno Botha's move to Belfast fell through due to a medical assessment.
