Ulster Rugby fly-half Brett Herron talks to Q Radio Sport about the start of the season

Fly-half Brett Herron is just one of many young players that seem to be exploding on to the Ulster team of late. Herron, Rob Lyttle, Jacob Stockdale and Ross Kane head a list of youthful players to have made an early-season mark on the  first XV "It's very exciting to be a part of the squad" said Herron "Those boys that you've mentioned have shown their class".

Herron on young players:

In last weekend's game Lyttle came on for the injured Craig Gilroy.  By the time his competitive debut was finished, Lytte had two tries and a place on Sky Sports' team of the week.  Kane was impressive in both the pack and the middle of the park, while Stockdale showed his brilliance with a solo kick-and-chase try.  Herron himself is no slouch either in the 29-8 win, putting in the kind of impressive performance that made the home crowd feel they may have the fly-half position covered for the forseeable future.

Ulster had to come from behind last weekend to win and Herron had plenty of praise for the Welsh side "Credit to Dragons, they started well" said Herron. While loath to blame the start too much on early season rustiness, Herron was glad to see how the Ulstermen rallied to record an eventually comfortable win.

Herron on Ulster's start against Dragons:

Friday night did show that Ulster can certainly rely on the home crowd to help them over the line.  Several new players have commented on the impact Kingspan Stadium would have on the oppposition.  "The noise when you're running out" said Herron "It was amazing to be there and to be a part of it."  Kingspan has never been a easy place for the opposition, and the new players seem to agree that the home support is one of Ulster's most potent weapons.

Herron on Kingspan:

Ulster can't rest on their laurels too much though, next up is a trip to Northern Italy to take on Treviso.  Ulster have an exceptional record against the Italians, but the camp is taking nothing for granted.  Herron reiterated those concerns "we're treating it just like any other game" said Herron but he is also quietly hopeful of a win.

Herron on Treviso:

Saturday's lineup won't be announced until midday on Friday, but as always there is plenty of competition for places.  Several players vying for one position is never a bad thing, with Brett Herron pleased at the kind of intensity that competition brings.  "Everyone is fighting for their place and you're always trying to put put pressure on each other, to try and help each other improve"

Herron on Competition for places:

Herron and the rest of the squad fly out to Treviso tomorrow ahead of Saturday's game.
