Volunteers are coming out in force today on the streets in support of Belfast City Poppy Day.

They're hoping to get shoppers, workers and visitors to help build up the £1.3million target set for the regions annual appeal.

The Royal British Legion Centre in Fountain Street will also be hosting a series of events throughout the day.

Northern Ireland football legend David Healy is expected to visit there this lunchtime to encourage supporters.

Lyn Palmer, The Royal British Legion’s Community Fundraiser for Northern Ireland, wants the Northern Ireland public to really get behind the day, she said:

“We hope that this year's City Poppy Day will have a fantastic, fun family atmosphere, and that the Northern Ireland public will be as supportive as ever. Last year’s first-ever Belfast City Poppy Day raised more than £3,000 on the day, and we would love to try and double that amount this year.

“Every donation received will make a real difference to the lives of servicemen and women, veterans and their loved ones. The Legion’s work is entirely dependent on the public’s generous support – so please wear your poppy with pride, knowing that you are helping the Armed Forces community to live on.”

The money raised in Northern Ireland will go towards the national target of £43 million which will be used to support to the Armed Forces community.
