Tributes have been paid to an Aughnacloy man who died following a fatal accident at a horticulture factory in County Tyrone.

Phillip Moore, thought to have been in his late 30s, died at Westland Peat in Granville, Dungannon, yesterday.

An investigation has been launched by the Health and Safety Executive to understand the circumstances of the accident.

The father-of-one was a regular participant at Clogher Valley Rugby Football Club, who payed tribute to Mr Moore on social media.

The statement read: "It is with deep regret we have been informed that our friend and playing colleague Phillip Moore passed away this morning after an accident at work. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Ruth, daughter Lilly and the family.

"Phillip played for Clogher Valley RFC for his whole rugby career - Ulster U18 in 1998 - 2000 and Ulster Juniors for over a decade. He was immense on the pitch and a true gentleman off the pitch. He was part of the winning Towns Cup teams and the Junior Cup and many league titles, he was feared by many opposition props on the pitch.

"Phillip will be sadly missed by all at Clogher Valley Rugby Club, on and off the pitch."

First Minister Arlene Foster described the news as a 'huge shock'.

The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA said: "I didn't know Philip personally but after speaking to those who knew him, it is clear he was a real gentleman who loved his family immensely and was a wonderful friend.

"He will be missed by his colleagues and I know within Clogher Valley Rugby Club who held him in such high regard.

"This news has been a huge shock to Westland Horticulture, where he worked and indeed the entire Clogher Valley area. I extend my deepest sympathies to his family. They are foremost in our prayers during such a difficult time.”

A statement released by the Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland said they are making the "relevant enquiries" into the death.

It read: "HSENI is aware of the incident at Westland Peat, Dungannon, and is making enquiries. Our thoughts are with the deceased’s family at this tragic time.”
