A suspicious object discovered in Newtownabbey has been deemed a hoax.

The Bomb Squad carried out a controlled explosion in the Whitewell Road area of the town this morning.

Police say the security alert is now over and people are being allowed back into their homes and businesses.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed any unusual activity in the area overnight or anyone with any information that can assist with the investigation to contact officers in Tennent Street on 101 quoting reference 268 24/07/18.

"Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime."
