A union representing school principals across Northern Ireland will today begin balloting members on possible strike action.

The National Association of Head Teachers represents principals and vice-principals in about two-thirds of our schools.

The union has now served legal notice that it is formally beginning a ballot.

NAHT(NI) President Geri Cameron said: “It is time for action. Today, members will be sent ballot papers to their home address and they must indicate if they are willing to participate in strike action and action short of strike.

“I would encourage every member to complete the ballot and return it as soon as possible before the deadline.

“Any action taken by members will be directed towards the employers who have failed to end the dispute which focuses on workload, the inspection process, consultation and support for schools.

"We will work towards minimising any impact upon learners and their families.

“The union remain open to further negotiations with the employers to find a resolution that will positively impact on the work life of school leaders.”
