A man is being treated in hospital after being shot with AEP baton rounds by police in Belfast.
The victim , who was in a state of distress, turned up at Antrim Road police station with a suspected firearm at around 4.15am this morning.
However he quickly made off before being located in the Waterworks area of the city.
Police say they opened fire to prevent him from harming himself.
The man's injuries are not believed to be life threatening and the Police Ombudsman's Office has been informed.
Chief Inspector Gary Reid said: "At around 4:15am this morning a male in distress presented himself at Antrim Road Police Station in north Belfast.
"The male, who was in possession of a suspected firearm, subsequently made off.
"Our specially trained officers responded and located the male in the Waterworks area.
“In an attempt to prevent the man from harming himself, AEP rounds were discharged. During the course of this, the male was injured.
"First aid was administered on the male, who was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries which are not thought to be life threatening.”
A PSNI spokesperson said the the Police Ombudsman's Office has been informed and will now examine whether the incident meets the criteria for an investigation.
