Police are investigating two hate crimes in north Belfast which may be linked.

Criminal damage was caused to a sign at Grove playing fields and sectarian graffiti was daubed on the wall of changing rooms overnight.

A property on Ballysillan Road was also targeted along with the garage and a car.

Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly has condemned the incidents.

“In the early hours of this morning, sectarian banners were erected and graffiti daubed on the walls of changing rooms at the Grove Playing Fields," he said.

“A nearby home was also targeted with sectarian and paramilitary slogans painted on the house.

"The family car was also damaged in this attack.

“This is a clear attempt by sinister and cowardly elements to stroke up sectarian tension in our community.

“There can be absolutely no place in society for this thuggish behaviour.

“This ongoing intimidation campaign against local nationalist residents must end immediately.

“Sinn Féin have contacted the Council to have the banner and graffiti removed.

“I call on all political parties to unite in their condemnation of this cowardly activity. We must collectively work to build an inclusive and respectful society, free from sectarianism and bigotry.”

Chief Inspector Gary Reid said: “Police received a report this morning just after 10:25am about criminal damage caused to a sign erected in the vicinity of Grove Playing Fields in the Jellicoe Avenue area of north Belfast.

“It was also reported that graffiti was daubed on the sign and on a wall at the grounds. It’s believed this occurred sometime overnight.

“This is being treated as a hate incident.

“We are also investigating a report made to us at 12:30am this morning about criminal damage caused at a property on Ballysillan Road in north Belfast. It was reported graffiti had been daubed on to the walls and windows of a house, a garage and cars. This is being treated as a hate incident.

“We are working to establish if both of these incidents are linked and would appeal to anyone who has information to call us on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 758 of 14/06/20 or 96 of 14/06/20."
