Police arrest a 21-year-old man on suspicion of burglary following East Belfast incident

Police have arrested a 21-year-old man on suspicion of burglary following an incident in East Belfast in the early hours of this morning.

A householder in The Cyprus Park area was woken by the sound of breaking glass and discovered damage to the rear door of their property.

Local officers arrested a 21-year-old after a witness description described a suspicious male in the area. He was later arrested on  on suspicion of a number of offences including burglary and drug possession.

Inspector Pete Cunningham said: "Local officers responded and on arrival, spoke to a witness and obtained a description of a suspicious male who had just left the area on a bicycle.

"The 21 year old male was located a short distance away and following some inquiries, was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including burglary and drug possession.

“I would also like to remind residents to make home security part of their daily routine as part of efforts to reduce and prevent burglaries.

“Make sure to close, lock and check all windows and doors before you leave the house or go to bed. Get into the habit of doing this every day and make sure to get everyone in the house involved. The more you make this part of your daily routine, the less chance you have of being targeted by opportunistic burglars. 

"While we have made an arrest I would still appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Cyprus Park/Grand Parade area between 1.30 and 2.30 am this morning, or who may be able to help with our investigation, to call us on the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference number 158 of 3 June 2020, or submit a report online using our non-emergency reporting form."
