Orlaithi Flynn is understood to be co-opted in as a new assembly member for West Belfast.

The Sinn Fein member is the only candidate to be nominated

Her nomination will now go to the party’s Ard Chomhairle for ratification.

She will replace Jennifer McCann who's given up her post to be an advisor to the Health Minister.

Speaking after a selection convention, the 28-year-old said: "I am honoured and privileged to have been nominated by Sinn Féin in West Belfast for co-option to the Assembly to represent the people of the Colin area.

"I would like to pay tribute to my friend and colleague Jennifer McCann as she steps down as MLA and moves on to another important role within the party. She has been and continues to be an inspiration to me and to many others."

The 28-year-old from the Colin area of West Belfast has been a Sinn Féin activist since her teens.

Orlaithí has worked for five years as a political advisor to three Sinn Féin MLAs Rosie McCorley, Sue Ramsey and Alex Maskey.
