Gerry Adams says he has no regrets about stepping down as Sinn Fein leader.

He's set to be replaced at a special conference in February after being party president for 34 years.

The 69-year-old told Q Radio News it's a crucial time here and in Europe but he's confident Sinn Fein's future is in safe hands.

The Sinn Fein leader held a news conference in a west Belfast shopping centre on Saturday afternoon.

He told Q Radio News there's still a long way to go in the EU negotiations and issues remain regarding "the rights of citizens and the contradictions between the British government position on leaving the Customs Union and Single Market and no hard border."

He did say, however, progress is being made.

The Louth TD claimed a united Ireland is now achievable.
