The Chief of Hastings Group, which runs a number of hotels in Northern Ireland, says redundancy letters issued to staff amid the coronavirus pandemic will be rescinded.

It comes after a spokesperson from Unite the Union said some workers at the Hastings Group have been made redundant.

The group own hotels such as the Slieve Donard, The Culludeon, The Europa and The Grand Central in Belfast.

The chancellor announced government grants yesterday covering 80% of salaries for staff who can’t work but who are kept on by employers.

Unite Hospitality organiser Neil Moore has been speaking to Q Radio and says he challenged Hastings Group on the decision to cut jobs.

A spokesperson for Hastings Group confirmed to Q Radio, staff issued with redundancy letters will have them rescinded on the back of yesterday's announcement by the Chancellor.

Meanwhile, after it was announced the job losses would be reversed Mr Moore welcomed the news.

"This decision by Hastings follows a determined campaign by Unite to protect hospitality jobs.

"Once again this case illustrates the importance of union membership, especially for workers in sectors such as hospitality which are characterised by precariousness and poor working conditions."

It followed he announcement of 800 layoffs in the Beannchor Group, one of Northern Ireland's largest hospitality businesses, setting off a domino effect throughout the industry, Mr Moore said.

He added: "The likes of Beannchor must reverse their decisions and ensure all of their staff are paid fully during this period of crisis."
