Driver arrested after Belfast collision leaves woman critical

A woman is in critical condition after being knocked down in Belfast. 

She was struck by a black Nissan Leaf on Stewartstown Road - near the Suffolk Day Centre - at around 6.15pm yesterday evening. 

The 49-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm. 

He's been released on bail by police who are appealing for information.   

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Detectives are investigating a serious road traffic collision that occurred on the Stewartstown Road in Belfast yesterday, Friday 5 June.

"A female pedestrian was struck by a black Nissan Leaf at around 6.15pm close to Suffolk Day Centre.

"She was taken to hospital where her condition is described as critical.

"The driver of the car, a 49 year old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily injury and has since been released on bail to return at a future date.

"Police would like to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity of the Stewartstown Road at around 6pm yesterday and witnessed the collision, or anyone who may have captured phone or dash-cam footage. Please call 101, quoting reference 1545 05/06/20."
