The Director of Public Prosecutions is to appeal a sentence handed down to former loyalist supergrass Gary Haggarty.

Stephen Herron's taking the action on the grounds that the six-and-a-half years is too lenient.

The 45-year-old formerly led a Belfast UVF unit, and was a paid informer for the police over 11 years.

He admitted to 5 murders, as well as 5 attempted, and more than 500 offences in total were considered in his sentencing.

His punishment was reduced for agreeing to give evidence against other paramilitaries.
