The four-time major winner pulled out of the Olympics over Zika virus fears
Northern Ireland golfer Rory McIlroy says that he made a mistake in doubting golf's place in the Rio Olympics. Golf returned to the Olympics for the first time since the 1904 games with McIlroy among several high profile players who decided to withdraw from the competition.
Aside from fears over Zika, McIlroy also felt that golf didn't really belong at the Olympics claiming that the prestige of the four majors will always take precedent and that Olympic golf wasn't particularly necessary. However, the Holywood golfer says that he was wrong in that ascertation, saying that he was pleased to see Olympic golf turn out to be such a success.
McIlroy said that he was taken aback by golf's popularity in Brazil and was pleased to see such a good turnout of fans. The Gold medal was one by Team GB's Justin Rose, with Open Champion Henrik Stenson taking silver.
