A work scheme that sees additional burial plots added to pre-existing undeveloped land in an Omagh cemetery commences today.

Work to extend Omagh's Greenhill Cemetery gets under way today.

The scheme will see the creation additional burial space on existing undeveloped land on the site situated on the Gortin Road near the town.

"The development works to Greenhill Cemetery, which is managed by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, will involve the creation of additional burial plots on existing undeveloped land," a council statement read.

Sections A to D within the cemetery will be unaffected by the developments and will remain open.

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council have stressed all works will be carried out with the utmost sensitivity.

"The Council will closely monitor the development to ensure works are carried out sensitively. The Council will also work closely with local undertakers during the development and will suspend works to the site for the duration of burial services to ensure minimal disruption," the council added.

It's thought the works to extend the cemetery will be completed by the middle of December of this year. Council have stated, however, that poor weather conditions may hamper efforts.

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council have also apologised in advance for any inconvenience that may be caused during the duration of the developments.
