Tyrone father dedicates his life to Cystic Fibrosis

Q Radio has been speaking to Castlederg man Liam McHugh, who has been fundraising 25 years for Cystic Fibrosis.

It all started back when his daughter was born and diagnosed with the illness.

At the time, the life expectancy was 16 years for someone with Cystic Fibrosis, so Liam wanted to raise enough money towards research in the hope for a better and longer life for his daughter.

Now, 25 years later, Liam has raised a total of 140,000 pounds through fundraising.

With years of funding for research towards CF, the life expectancy has gone up to 42 years.

Liam has been spreading awareness about a drug called Orkambi or the ‘wonder drug’ that was used here in Northern Ireland on a trial basis.

The results of the drug showed massive improvements to those tested, however it wasn’t cost effective so the National Institute for Health Care Excellence have not approved it.
