Police in Strabane have taken to social media to urge members of the public to be more vigilant coming in to the winter months.

It's after oil was stolen from a house in the Castlederg area.

Sergeant Brown posted on the Strabane PSNI facebook page on Saturday:

"With winter weather upon us, I'm sure most people are filling up their oil tanks to be prepared.

"Unfortunately some unscrupulous thieves don't believe people should have the advantage of the heat they paid for and have stolen oil from the oil tank of an elderly lady in the Castlederg area.

"I would ask that people be vigilant regarding this type of activity over the winter period, and if anybody knows who is up to this sort of behaviour - let us know."

Yesterday, one day after the theft, police received further reports of males acting suspiciously in Sion Mills through the night.

It's believed to be an attempt to steal home heating oil.

A PSNI spokesperson said:

"Whilst an oil tank is difficult to protect please can you take any extra measures available so you aren't a victim of this type of crime.

"If you see anyone acting suspiciously please call us straight away and please share this post."
