Residents encouraged to protect themselves from thieves

"We work hard and save hard to buy nice things - please don't give them away to thieves! Our home is our castle and our car is our carriage - these are things that the thieves target their terrible trade on." - spokesperson for Fermanagh and Omagh PSNI. 
 

Following a recent number of burglaries in the Fermanagh and Omagh District, police are trying to encourage residents to be more prepared and aware of ways they can protect themselves and deter thieves. 
 

A spokesperson for the PSNI took to social media to provide local people with a few steps and ideas that can help them: 

"As many cars are now fitted with effective alarms and immobilisers, the easiest ways to steal the car is break into the house and steal the keys for the car. 

" Many of us, I know, will leave the keys on window sills, or kitchen counters in full view of those looking in, or leave the keys near the front or the back door - please don't - you are only making it easier for the thief to steal your prize possession.

" If you don't need to leave a key to allow quick exit in the event of an emergency within the home, please do, but make sure it is a single house key, left close to the door but again, hidden if possible. 

"Tell all family members where the key is should it be needed but DON'T leave your car keys on display!

"Please make sure you always lock your car and that there are no valuables on displays within it. 

"Always keep the doors and windows locked of your home and make sure you hide your car keys where only you can find them. Please help us help you to not become a victim of crime."
