The Association of Town and City Management - the body that award Purple Flag status - have granted Omagh the award in recognition of its evening and night-time economy.

Omagh has been granted Purple Flag status..

The accolade has been given to the town in recognition of its evening and night-time economy.

In particular, for its excellence in entertainment and evening hospitality.

Purple Flag is a town and city centre award – similar to the Blue Flag for beaches – which recognises areas that provide a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents.

The town joins Enniskillen, Newry and Derry - and becomes only the fifth town in Northern Ireland - to acheive the distinction.

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council Chairperson Mary Garrity, says the new status will bring a boost to the local economy.

"From a council point of view: it's great for the town, great for business and great for tourism. So we can incorporate this into our plan by saying both our major towns in the district have this status - so that should encourage even more visitors and hopefully help local businesses, in the evening time, both in Enniskillen and Omagh."
