Motorcyclists are just 1 per-cent of total road traffic, but account for 19 per-cent of all road user deaths.

These figures have inspired "Bike Safe" workshops across Northern Ireland, with "Bridging the Gap" as the tagline.

One of the schemes were recently held at Enniskillen Fire Station.

Bike Safe works with bikers in a relaxed environment, with the idea to raise awareness of key safety issues and to inspire a genuine desire to progress to accredited post-test training.

The workshops held throughout Northern Ireland consist of up to 2 hours classroom time, looking at Motorcycle Roadcraft and focusing on issues such as collision causation, cornering, positioning and overtaking.

This is followed by an observed ride-out with an advanced police motorcyclist.

By attending a BikeSafe workshop, it helps riders identify their own strengths and weaknesses.

It gives a taste of what safer motorcycling techniques can add to their overall ride.

Participants receive a goodie bag and certificate on completion, which can allow them to benefit from incentives such as discounted insurance premiums.

PSNI Constable Trevor Kirke, NI BikeSafe Coordinator, speaking at the latest workshop held at the Fire Station in Enniskillen last Saturday, said:

“Through theory presentations and observed rides, the BikeSafe workshops help riders discover their strengths and weaknesses, and provide advice on how they can develop their skills so they can get even more enjoyment from riding their motorcycle.”

BikeSafe NI is supported by the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

Martin Colton – local IAM Observer added: “The Institute of Advanced Motorists in Northern Ireland (IAM) works closely with BikeSafe. We regard the skills that are developed in BikeSafe as the first substantial steps in Advanced Riding, helping to improve rider performance, safety and fun.

We encourage the best riders that have the skill and flair to perform well at BikeSafe to challenge themselves to become Advanced Riders with IAM, and possibly attain the highest civilian riding qualification in the UK & Ireland, a Masters in Advanced Riding.”
