Police chase and arrest man in connection with incidents in Downpatrick

Detectives investigating a number of incidents in the greater Downpatrick area over the weekend have arrested a 30-year-old man.

The suspect was detained following reports of a man acting suspiciously in the Old Course Road area at around 5.20am this morning. 

The man then got into a silver VW Passat and made off towards killough, when the vehicle was pursued by the PSNI. 

Police say the car collided with a bridge at the Station Road area but continued to travel before being stopped at the Ardglass Road. 

The man was arrested on suspicion of motoring offences. 

He was also detained on suspicion of offences that occurred separately over the weekend in Downpatrick. 

The suspect is assisting police with enquiries. 

Detective Sergeant Foley said, “We would like to thank the public for the information they provided to assist with our investigation.

"We continue to have a visible policing presence across the greater Downpatrick area keeping the local community safe.”

Meanwhile, on Monday the PSNI released details of an incident in the Crewhill Gardens area on Saturday 2nd May. 

Shortly after 9.55pm that night, it was reported a silver Renault Megane arrived and a man armed with a suspected gun emerged. 

The man re-entered the car and made off from the area. 

Meanwhile, in the early hours of Sunday 3rd May, it was reported a man arrived in the Glebetown Road area in a silver Renault Megane, got out of the car and pointed a suspected gun at a house at around 12.20am. 

A short time later, police said the suspect returned to the house armed but left the scene on foot. 

The PSNI also received reports that a number of vehicles were damaged at the Ballymote Walk area of Downpatrick at around 3am on Sunday 3rd May. 

Detective Sergeant Foley said, "A potential link is being investigated between these incidents at this stage."
