Deirdre Hargey was last night elected the new Lord Mayor of Belfast, replacing Nuala McAllister of the Alliance Party.

Councillor Hargey is the first woman from Sinn Fein to be first citizen and only the fifth female lord mayor in the council's history.

New deputy mayor, the Alliance's Emmet McDonough-Brown, said he was disappointed no unionist spoke to welcome them into their new civic roles.

The Lord Mayor told Q Radio she wants to work with everyone and would consider attending Remembrance Sunday...

She insists the controversy over her being in Magennis's Bar on the night Robert McCartney was murdered in 2005 will not overshadow her year in office.
