The Industrial Symbiosis Service, funded by Invest NI and delivered by International Synergies NI, is hosting a specially arranged resource matching synergy workshop next month.

The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council has encouraged local companies to consider their resource pooling and recycling options by attending the event.

Participating companies can identify opportunities to reuse, repurpose or recycle wasted business resources, while facilitating networking opportunities across industry sectors.

Over the last decade, the Industrial Symbiosis Service has hosted 40 of these workshops across Northern Ireland.

At their last workshop in the Old Bushmill's Distillery, the service identified £1.3 million in potential cost savings.

This could divert 10,846 tonnes from landfill.

Mayor Alderman Hilary McClintock, is urging local businesses to register for the event on Wednesday June 21st.

"The Industrial Symbiosis Service has achieved staggering success for the businesses involved and this workshop offers the perfect opportunity for companies in the Derry and Strabane area to explore their resource sharing and cost saving options locally."

“The event will allow businesses to be inspired by best practise case studies, discover more efficient and environmentally friendly solutions for their wasted resources and find out how the resources of other companies may be of use to them.

“It also offers an important networking opportunity for local businesses to make new connections.”

Since 2007, the Industrial Symbiosis Service have delivered cost savings of £24.8 million and generated additional sales of £16 million, creating and saving 96 jobs.

It is the longest running service of its type in the world and has made a positive contribution to the local environment by diverting 390k tonnes from landfill and reducing green house gas emissions by 335,000 tonnes.
