A Derry-Londonderry mother-of-two says she is terrified to stay in her home after petrol bombers targeted her family car.

The woman, who is too afraid to be identified, said her family were woken by a neighbour banging on their door shortly after 7am this morning.

The family found their new Ford car in flames at their front door in the Waterside area of the city.

Someone had placed a rag in a bottle, which was placed on the parked car and set alight.

The woman's partner and neighbours tried to extinguish the flames with water and snow, preventing more serious damage.

She told QRadio that her children, including her severely autistic young son were petrified:

Sergeant Martin Hughes said: "Police are appealing for witnesses and information following a report of criminal damage to a car in the Hollymount Park area of Derry/Londonderry.

"At approximately 7.30am this morning, Wednesday, 23 January, police received a report that a bottle with a rag in it had been placed on a parked car and set alight.

"We would appeal to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity or vehicles in the area or anyone who has any information that could assist police with their enquiries to contact police"
