Following the success of this years North West Angling fair in Strabane, Derry City and Strabane District Council are seeking new applicants for an angling course.

It's part of their Kickstart 2 Work scheme for local unemployed people in the district.

The scheme offers a number of water sports qualifications as part of its Maritime Ambassador Programme.

The angling course has been running successfully since 2015 and is open to anyone who would like to have fun while exploring fishing in the local area.

It also gives unemployed people the chance to increase they employability skills and gain recognised qualifications.

The course can be completed within 5 days and complimentary lunch will be provided.

For anyone with no previous experience of fishing, participants will receive full training to achieve beginner level 'CAST' qualifications.

They will then have the option to progress on to becoming a qualified Assistant Angling Coach.

Project officer for the Maritime Ambassador Programme at Derry City and Strabane District Council, Geraldine O hEara, said:

"We are blessed with a number of beautiful, popular rivers and loughs in and around our council area, so the opportunity to get to know these while learning new practical angling skills in the beautiful surroundings of the Loughs Agency under the watchful supervision of experience coaches, is a great opportunity."

You must be over 18, unemployed, reside in the Council area and not enrolled in any other education or training to be eligible for the course.
