The inquest into the Buncrana Pier tragedy in which five members of the one Derry Londonderry family drowned will open again this morning.

Yesterday it was revealed that the driver of the car involved in the tragedy - Sean McGrotty - was three times over the drink driving limit.

Mr McGrotty died alongside his two sons Mark and Evan, his mother-in-law Ruth and her daughter Jodie in March 2016 after their car slid off a Buncrana slipway into Lough Swilly.

Yesterday the inquest heard from eyewitnesses at the scene, Davitt Walsh who rescued baby Rioghnach from the car and grieving mother Louise James as well as representatives from Garda Siochana and Donegal County Council.

Coroner Dr Denis McCauley will hear evidence from Audi Ireland, Irish Water Safety and two witnesses from the RNLI and Gardai Siochana who are expected to speak about gaining access to Mr McGrotty’s vehicle.

Dr McCauley will also hear post mortem findings and is expected to conclude with a safety message on how to get out of a sinking car".
