A 12-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life following a fire at a derelict building in Co Londonderry.

Detectives investigating the blaze in the Catherine Street area of Limavady on Thursday said they have made an arrest.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Shortly before 5:55pm, it was reported that a fire occurred at derelict premises in the area.

“Colleagues from Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS), who were already in attendance brought the fire under control.

“Thankfully, there were no reports of any injuries and the incident is being treated as deliberate ignition at this time.”

The spokesperson added: “A 12-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and bailed pending further inquiries.

“Catherine Street remains closed with diversions in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area.”

NIFRS said eight fire appliances and one aerial appliance dealt with the blaze.
