A Ballymena man who allegedly told police he would "murder" his mother has been remanded in custody.

Conor McGill (26), of Centuripe Avenue, appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court accused of making a threat to kill; making a threat to damage his mum's home at Fisherwick Crescent in Ballymena and a third charge of assaulting her.

The offences are alleged to have happened on Sunday January 6th.

A police officer said they believed they could connect the defendant to the charges.

The officer objected to bail and told the court that on January 6 police attended a report of a disturbance and spoke to McGill's mother who said she had been awakened by her son banging at her door asking for his passport.

He allegedly told his mother he was going to "wreck" the house and "put in every window in the place".

The police officer said that earlier McGill had allegedly told his mum he was going to "take the face off" her.

McGill was arrested and while at Antrim custody suite told police he was "going to murder" his mother and he then punched a wall in the interview room.

He said he would "drive his fist through his mother's face," the officer told the court.

Defence solicitor Derwin Harvey said there had been no actual violence used by the defendant against his mum but he had been "shouting and roaring threats".

Added the lawyer: "I appreciate the comments he makes are very concerning. He was basically saying anything to police whilst he was under the influence of drugs."

Remanding the defendant in custody, Deputy District Judge Peter Magill said McGill had allegedly made "threats of the utmost violence and repeats these to police and says he will murder his mother."

The judge said he was "not prepared to take a chance" by releasing the defendant on bail.

The case was adjourned to the end of January.
