Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council (DCSDC), Councillor Maolíosa McHugh has hosted a reception in the Guildhall to celebrate the achievement of local schools and colleges who took part in this year’s ‘AWARE Mood Walk’.

It was also an opportunity to say a "heartfelt thank you" to to pupils and staff who raised £2,841.36 for the charity.

AWARE is the Mayor’s chosen charity for his term in office and the charity delivers programmes to young people about the importance of looking after their mental health and encourages them to seek help if they feel they are struggling.

Mayor McHugh said:

“I was delighted to meet representatives from the schools and colleges throughout the council area who participated in this year’s AWARE Mood Walk.

“I have been really blown away by the fantastic amount raised, £2,841.36, and cannot thank all of the pupils and teachers enough for their very kind donations.

“These fun-filled walks were a perfect opportunity for local schools and colleges to become actively involved in supporting pupils’ mental health and physical wellbeing.

“Indeed, the amazing amount which has been raised will help AWARE continue with their hugely important work in delivering education and support programmes, and to reach out to many more of our young people.”
