40 bulls trapped in an overturned lorry and trailer have been rescued in Newtownbutler.

It happened on the Cavan Road at around 6.30am this morning.

The NIFRS says it received reports of "an articulated lorry overturned" and that there was livestock trapped.

Two appliances were dispatched from Lisnaskea, a Rescue pump from Enniskillen, Omagh’s specialist Large Animal Rescue Team, and Officers from Enniskillen and Portadown District attended.

On arrival crews established that the driver had managed to free himself from the lorry, without sustaining injuries.

There were 42 bulls stuck in the upturned trailer and using cutting and rescue equipment 40 were saved.

However, two had died in the impact.

A spokesperson for the NIFRS says, "This was a particularly hazardous incident for our personnel to resolve, given the unpredictability, size, and large number of the livestock involved, especially when distressed.

"We are happy to report that none of our crews were injured whilst performing rescue operations."
