The UK and Irish governments have backed a potential joint bid to stage the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Games would be played in Northern Ireland and the Republic - as well as England, Scotland and Wales.
The five football associations intend to work together in an attempt to land the tournament.
2030 is the centenary of the first World Cup and FIFA will open the formal bidding process next year.
Junior Sports Minister in the Republic, Jack Chambers, says the finer details of the plan are being worked on:

Meanwhile, two international challenge matches have been arranged for the end of the season:
Northern Ireland are to face Turkey and Ukraine in friendlies this summer. Turkey in Antalya on Monday 31 May before flying to Kiev to play Ukraine on Thursday 3 June. There are six games in the Danske Bank Premiership on Tuesday night, including Glentoran against Linfield.
The Big Two also met last Tuesday, with the Glens winning 1-0 at Windsor Park thanks to a dramatic late goal from Conor McMenamin.
Linfield are five points clear at the top going into the game.
Coleraine now sit second and they face Portadown at the Showgrounds.
Larne host Crusaders, Ballymena have Cliftonville, Carrick go to Glenavon and Warrenpoint welcome Dungannon Swifts.
