Two people have died following a two vehicle crash outside Ballymoney yesterday.

A man in his 70s and a woman in her 40s were fatally injured in an incident involving a car and a construction vehicle on the Benvardin Road just after 4pm.

The victims were the driver and rear passenger in the car.

Two other people, a man and a woman, were travelling in the vehicle and treated in hospital.

Local councillor Joan Baird says those who died were from the village of Ballyvoy.

''Both people are well known and I want to send the families my deepest sympathy,'' she said.

Councillor Darryl Wilson also says his thoughts are with those who were injured and with the grieving relatives of the deceased.

Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan said the community is in shock following the tragedy.

"I have no doubt the community will support the families of those who died in the days and months ahead,'' he added.

"My thoughts and sympathies are with the family, friends and loved ones of those who tragically lost their lives in this crash at this sad and difficult time.”

Police have appealed for anyone with dashcam footage of the crash to contact them by calling 101.

East Londonderry MLA Claire Sugden said: “This is a devastating loss of life, and while words can’t even begin to lessen the pain being experienced by their families I offer my deepest sympathies at this impossibly difficult time.

“To have loved ones taken so suddenly leaves not just profound grief, but devastating shock as well.

“I sincerely hope the other two passengers who were in the car recover from their injuries as soon as possible.”
